What’s in a Pronoun?

So I have one little suggestion to end the misogyny, sexual abuse, harassment, and predation that plagues humanity. STOP CALLING God “HE” and “HIM” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mary Daly, feminist theologian at Boston College, once quipped, “If God is male, then the male is God.” Beyond God the Father (Beacon, 1973) Every time we give gender attribution to the Creator, we deny half of creation. If both male and female are created “in the image and likeness of God”; if we both reflect God, why do we only refer to God as “He”? The Bible is full of the masculine pronoun. So is the Torah and the Qu’ran.

By identifying with this little word and its grammatical variations men consider themselves superior to women. Women are only their “helpmates” and must be submissive to them. They are chattel, to be owned, and treated anyway a man sees fit. It’s no wonder men feel entitled to do whatever they want to women…and children… and other men they think are less than they are.

I am not saying that men do not reflect the Divine.  I am saying that if we limit that reflection to only males in our language then our society will elevate the male ego to heights where it perceives it can do no wrong.

I am happy to report: “The Church of Sweden is urging its clergy to use gender-neutral language when referring to the supreme deity, refraining from using terms such as “Lord” and “he” in favour of the less specific “God.”

It’s one small step for humankind….

Would that all faith traditions would take the same path!
